On Wednesday, March 15, 2017, CREW Richmond welcomed Jane Ferrara, Chief Operating Officer - Economic and Community Development of the City of Richmond, for a program highlighting the City's efforts around transportation-oriented development. Jane presented the following principles guiding the City in creating more transit-oriented development: mixed-use development, variable transportation alternatives, dense compact development, historic preservation, and connectivity.
Jane emphasized a number of assets the City and the region can leverage to spur economic development -the Richmond International Airport, the DC2RVA passenger rail initiative, the BRT (as we learned about in our February meeting),the James River and the Richmond Marine Terminal. These assets connect the region's seemingly disparate localities and link the region to larger commercial centers and the global economy. Further, these assets will be utilized as the region is forecasted to experience significant job growth. Jane concluded with the takeaway that transportation-oriented development is not a "City issue", but a "regional opportunity."
